Synopsis
On stage, Taiwanese principal ballet dancer Tzu-Chao Chou fuses male physical power with the traditionally female technique of pointe work, creating a dance that defies classification.
The film follows his journey from rural Yilan in Taiwan to Australia, and ultimately to the Birmingham Royal Ballet in the UK, where he becomes a principal dancer. Moving through cultures and institutions, he rises from an unknown outsider to the pinnacle of classical ballet.
But years of physical strain force a reckoning: when the body is no longer reliable, what remains of identity?
As he builds a life between the UK, Australia, and Taiwan, he begins to imagine a future beyond the stage. After two decades, he returns to Taiwan and reconnects with a new generation of dancers, beginning to envision a national ballet company, shifting from a dancer shaped by systems to one who may reshape them.
